In a significant move for the advancement of mobile connectivity in Georgia, the country’s national telecommunications regulator, the Communications Commission of Georgia, has awarded critical 5G spectrum to leading telecom operator SilkNet. The outcome follows a highly anticipated spectrum auction aimed at accelerating the rollout of next-generation wireless networks across the nation.

Key Spectrum Bands Acquired by SilkNet

SilkNet emerged as the successful bidder with a total investment of GEL 48.8 million (approximately USD 17.7 million). The company acquired valuable spectrum assets in two crucial frequency ranges:

700 MHz Band: A 2×5 MHz paired block covering 723 MHz to 728 MHz uplink and 778 MHz to 783 MHz downlink. Ideal for broad 5G coverage in rural and urban areas.
3500 MHz Band (3.5 GHz): A 50 MHz block from 3610 MHz to 3660 MHz. Optimal for high-capacity, high-speed 5G services in dense population centers.

License Terms and Coverage Obligations

The spectrum licenses are valid for 15 years, offering long-term certainty. SilkNet is required to achieve progressive 5G deployment over the next seven years, covering:

Urban population centers
Major tourist destinations
Ports, airports, and railway hubs
Key national roadways and transport routes

MVNO Access Clause Declined

SilkNet declined a regulatory option that would have reduced its license fee by 20% in exchange for opening its network to Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs). This decision suggests a strategic focus on retaining exclusive network control and maximizing ROI from its 5G infrastructure.
