Slovakia’s Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Postal Services (RAECP) successfully completed the largest electronic auction of mobile spectrum in the country’s history on July 9, 2025. This event allocated nearly two-thirds of the spectrum required by mobile operators, a key milestone for Slovakia’s future mobile networks and digital infrastructure growth.

Comprehensive Spectrum Allocation Across Multiple Bands

The auction covered spectrum from the following bands: 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1500 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2600 MHz FDD, and 2600 MHz TDD. All frequencies were sold following fierce competition among four operators, generating a record revenue of €506 million, exceeding initial forecasts by around €140 million.

While this significant revenue will help consolidate the state budget, concerns remain that the high cost of spectrum acquisition could slow down operators’ investment plans in developing digital services and innovations that improve daily life.

Strategic Impact on Slovakia’s Telecommunications Market

The auction’s results mark a major advancement in the Slovak telecom market. With these newly acquired frequencies, operators can expand coverage, improve mobile internet speeds, deliver more reliable connections, and enhance user experience throughout Slovakia.

Ivan Marták, Chairman of the Regulatory Authority, highlighted that the spectrum allocation will significantly improve the quality and accessibility of mobile services nationwide.

License Duration and Payment Terms

The licenses are valid from January 1, 2029, until December 31, 2048, providing operators with long-term certainty. The 1500 MHz band is available immediately, while the 2100 MHz band will be accessible from September 8, 2026.

Payments for the assigned frequency bands will be made progressively from 2025 through 2028, allowing operators to manage investment costs during network deployment.
