Thailand’s telecommunications sector has taken a major step forward with the conclusion of a high-profile multi-band spectrum auction, conducted to support the ongoing expansion of advanced mobile networks. The auction, which offered frequency blocks in the 850 MHz, 1500 MHz, 2100 MHz, and 2300 MHz bands, drew strong interest from the country’s leading operators and generated over $1.28 billion in total bids.

Leading operator True Corporation emerged as the top spender, acquiring 20 MHz in the 1500 MHz band (1452–1472 MHz) and a substantial 70 MHz block in the 2300 MHz band (2300–2370 MHz), contributing $836 million in total bids. True’s strategy positions the company well for enhanced mid-band 5G capacity and network densification.

Rival operator AIS (Advanced Info Service) focused its investment on acquiring 2×15 MHz in the 2100 MHz band (1965–1980 MHz / 2155–2170 MHz), spending $464 million. This acquisition strengthens AIS's spectrum holdings in a key band used for LTE and 5G deployments, helping the operator maintain competitive performance in coverage and capacity.

No spectrum was awarded in the 850 MHz band during the auction.

With all available spectrum in the auction successfully sold, this latest regulatory initiative is seen as a vital milestone in Thailand’s digital development. The newly assigned frequencies will support the deployment of next-generation networks, improve mobile data speeds, and expand coverage in both urban and rural areas.

Regulators and industry analysts alike anticipate that the auction's outcomes will play a crucial role in shaping the future of 5G infrastructure, mobile broadband access, and telecom competition across the country.
