EKIP Montenegro closed 5G frequency spectrum auction
Montenegro's regulatory authority for electronic communications and postal services, known as EKIP, has declared that Crnogorski Telekom (CT), MTEL, and One Montenegro have successfully acquired frequencies within the 700MHz and 3.6GHz (3400MHz-3800MHz) bands through a 5G auction held in the previous month. Collectively, the three mobile operators have committed to a payment of EUR 8.836 million (USD 9.435 million). Notably, CT emerged as the most accomplished bidder, investing EUR 3.108 million to secure a 2×10MHz segment within the 700MHz band, alongside a 140MHz allocation of 3.6GHz frequencies. Similarly, both One and MTEL secured 2×10MHz portions of the 700MHz spectrum and 120MHz in the 3.6GHz band, contributing EUR 2.978 million and EUR 2.750 million, respectively.
EKIP has acknowledged that certain portions of unpaired 700MHz band and 26GHz spectrum have not been assigned due to insufficient interest from the operators.
In relation to their coverage responsibilities, all three operators are obligated to activate 5G networks in every municipality across Montenegro by the conclusion of 2024. Furthermore, they are required to ensure coverage for at least 50% of the country's population by the end of 2026 and extend their 5G services to all inhabited areas, major highways, and main roads by the culmination of 2030.
