Mobile operators in Sri Lanka use several key spectrum bands to provide a range of services, from traditional voice calls to high-speed 4G LTE data and upcoming 5G services. 

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) is the local authority responsible for managing and assigning spectrum to mobile network operators. This allocation is crucial to ensuring that operators can deliver high-quality mobile services, including voice, data, and increasingly, broadband internet access.

The TRCSL allocates spectrum through a combination of auctions, direct assignments, and administrative processes. Spectrum licenses are typically granted for periods ranging from 10 to 20 years, with operators required to pay license fees and adhere to technical and regulatory standards set by the TRCSL.

To ensure efficient use of the spectrum and to foster competition, the TRCSL periodically reviews the spectrum needs of the industry and makes adjustments as necessary. This includes refarming older bands to support new technologies like 4G and 5G, as well as releasing new spectrum through auctions.

Current frequency spectrum holders in Sri Lanka are the four biggest local operators: Airtel, Dialog, Hutch and Mobitel.
