Telecom spectrum news
Moldova
Moldova has completed its latest spectrum auction, allocating various frequency bands to three telecommunications companies. The auction raised EUR 26.31 million, a figure that reportedly fell below initial expectations.
The country regulatory body, ANRCETI, confirmed that Moldcell, Moldtelecom, and Orange Moldova acquired licenses for spectrum in the 700 MHz, 900 MHz, 1500 MHz, and 3400–3800 MHz bands. 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz, and 26 GHz frequency layers raised no interest.
Orange Moldova emerged as the highest bidder, securing eight 5 MHz blocks in the 1500 MHz frequency range and a 100 MHz portion in the 3600 MHz band for a total of EUR 11.95 million. Moldtelecom followed with a EUR 10.56 million bid, acquiring 2 x 10 MHz in the 700 MHz range and 2 x 5 MHz in the 900 MHz band. Moldcell spent EUR 3.8 million for two 20 MHz blocks within the 3600 MHz spectrum.
The final breakdown of new spectrum allocation is the following:
Frequency Band | Allocation | Operator | Cost |
---|---|---|---|
700 MHz | 723-733 / 778-788 MHz | Moldtelecom | EUR 10m |
900 MHz | 885-890 / 930-935 MHz | Moldtelecom | EUR 0.56m |
1500 MHz | 1452-1492 MHz | Orange Moldova | EUR 2.4m |
3600 MHz | 3660-3760 MHz | Orange Moldova | EUR 9.55m |
3600 MHz | 3760-3800 MHz | Moldcell | EUR 3.8m |
Payments for these licenses will be divided into five equal instalments, with the first due upon issuance and subsequent payments spread out over the next four years.
The licenses for the 700 MHz, 1500 MHz, and 3400–3800 MHz bands will remain valid until March 2050, while those for the 900 MHz spectrum will expire in November 2029.
