On March 24, 2025, the German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) announced a five-year extension of mobile frequency usage rights in the 800 MHz, 1,800 MHz, and 2,600 MHz bands.
This extension, effective until the end of 2030, aims to synchronize the expiration dates of these frequencies with others, facilitating future allocations and preventing artificial scarcity.
The decision includes obligations for mobile network operators, particularly to enhance coverage in rural areas, ensuring that by 2030, at least 99.5% of Germany's territory receives a minimum data rate of 50 Mbit/s.
Additionally, measures have been introduced to support the fourth network operator, 1&1 Mobilfunk GmbH, including securing national roaming agreements and promoting cooperative use of sub-1 GHz frequencies.
