Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MST) has officially concluded its latest mobile spectrum auction, successfully awarding a 15-year licence in the 700 MHz band to leading telecom operator Viettel. This move is expected to enhance national 5G coverage and accelerate digital infrastructure development across the country.

The auction offered a block of 2×10 MHz, specifically within the 713–723 MHz / 768–778 MHz frequency range. Viettel secured the licence after reportedly outbidding major competitor VNPT-Vinaphone, winning the rights at a starting price of VND 1.96 trillion (approximately USD 76 million).

Under the licence terms, Viettel is required to begin deploying services within 12 months of receiving the spectrum and must establish at least 5000 base stations within two years. These stations are expected to deliver 700 MHz coverage to a minimum of 50% of commune-level administrative regions throughout Vietnam.

This spectrum acquisition is seen as a major step in advancing 5G rollout plans nationwide, particularly in rural and underserved areas where lower-band frequencies like 700 MHz offer extended reach and stronger indoor signal penetration.

By winning this strategic spectrum block, Viettel further strengthens its leadership in Vietnam’s telecommunications sector and sets the stage for next-generation mobile connectivity that aligns with national digital transformation goals.
