New frequency spectrum allocation for Kosovo
IPKO and Telecom Kosovo have been granted frequencies suitable for 5G operations by the Regulatory Authority for Post and Electronic Communications (ARKEP) in Kosovo. According to a decision released on February 15th, the regulatory body has allocated Telecom Kosovo a 2×10MHz portion within the 800MHz band (811MHz-821MHz/852MHz-862MHz) in addition to a 1×100MHz segment within the 3.6GHz band (3510MHz-3610MHz). Similarly, IPKO has been allotted a 2×10MHz portion within the 800MHz band (791MHz-801MHz/832MHz-842MHz) along with a 1×100MHz block within the spectrum range of 3410MHz-3510MHz. These licenses are designed to be technology-agnostic and remain valid for a duration of 20 years.
ARKEP has highlighted that an extra 90MHz block of 5G spectrum, spanning the 3710MHz-3800MHz range, has been assigned to the NGN Institute. This allocation is intended to facilitate the establishment of localized private 5G networks or non-commercial networks. The regulatory authority emphasizes that this marks the first authorization of its kind in the region for such network deployments.
Commercial rollout on allocated frequency bands is still expected as market dynamic in the country is not demanding.
