Croatia Generates EUR 339 Million in Spectrum Auction Proceeds
The recent spectrum auction overseen by the Croatian Postal and Electronic Communications Agency (HAKOM) has resulted in a substantial EUR 339 million (USD 358 million) raised by the Croatian government. This auction featured three mobile network operators (MNOs) acquiring licenses spanning the 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, and 2600MHz bands.
Hrvatski Telekom (HT), A1, and Telemach emerged as the victorious bidders in this competitive process. HT, the incumbent operator, displayed the highest investment, securing spectrum rights across all five bands for a total expenditure of EUR 135.3 million. Following closely, A1 committed EUR 100 million, while Telemach contributed EUR 103.7 million.
The auction's triumph reflects positively on the Croatian government, as it managed to surpass the reserve price of EUR 155 million. The robust prices paid by the MNOs underpin the evident demand for spectrum within Croatia, as these operators gear up for the implementation of 5G networks.
A noteworthy aspect of the auction was the introduction of two fresh regional operators, Markoja and Digicom, who acquired spectrum allocations within the 3.5GHz band. Markoja's triumph encompassed licenses across six counties, while Digicom secured licenses within three counties.
This spectrum auction marks a significant stride forward for Croatia's 5G market. The newly acquired licenses will empower MNOs to expand their 5G network coverage, delivering swifter and more dependable services to both Croatian consumers and businesses.
Furthermore, the auction's outcomes send a promising signal to foreign investors keen on contributing to Croatia's digital economy. The elevated prices paid for spectrum allocations signify Croatia's competitiveness within the telecommunications service domain.
The auction reinforces Croatia's unwavering dedication to erecting a top-tier digital infrastructure. The fresh spectrum resources will play a pivotal role in accelerating the progression of 5G and other innovative technologies, consequently fostering economic growth and job creation within the nation.
